Buying guide

Choosing the right network equipment

WiFi or Ethernet?

WiFi suits mobile devices; Ethernet can make sense for fixed equipment. First work out which type of connection you need.

Ports and connectors

USB-A, USB-C, RJ45 and M.2 are not interchangeable. Check each device's connector before buying.

Standards and speeds

Choose according to the standards supported by your devices and your router. Advertised speeds are theoretical and vary depending on the installation.

PoE

PoE can carry data and power over Ethernet with compatible equipment. Always check the standards of the injector, the switch and the device.

Frequently asked questions

Questions about network equipment

When should I choose Ethernet?
For a fixed device, or when a wired link is available, Ethernet can avoid some radio interference.
How do I choose a WiFi adapter?
Check the connector, compatible operating system, bands, WiFi standard and any drivers needed.
What is an Ethernet switch for?
It lets you connect several wired devices to a network from an existing Ethernet link.
What is PoE?
Power over Ethernet lets compatible equipment carry data and power over a single cable.
Will faster equipment speed up my internet?
Not automatically: speed is still limited by the slowest link in the connection.
